A Friend of a Friend

What is a friend? What is the responsibility of being a friend?

friend Pronunciation (frnd)
n.
1. A person whom one knows, likes, and trusts

Funny, most friends I know don’t match up to that definition. I think, over time, you really see who your true friends are. Im not talking about relationship friends (wives, even girlfriends, lovers, etc, those are a different category), In fact, Im not sure what I am talking about.

I have friends, we bicker sometimes, mostly over petty things, but I consider them my friends. What is a “true” friend? The type of friend that would console you when a family member dies. The type of friend that likes to hang out, with no AM. Friends talk shit behind friends back, it’s true. Everybody does it every now and then. Since we have stated that to be true, can we really say we are “Friends” per definition?

What about friends we have lost, how about that friend you had in elementary, the one in high school, college perhaps? The type of person you thought “We are soulmates, I can’t imagine every being separated from this person”. Do you automatically hate that person, because you have grown apart? How many friends have you kept through thick and thin? Think about this..

How many friends do you have now that were your friends when you were 13? Those friends when you were 13 probably had been there with you for years and years. Now they are gone, a distant memory. Does friendship have a lifespan? Will I lose all of my friends once that lifespan, like in your childhood friendships, has passed?

I know everybody has a person they used to be friends with, and now they hate their guts. Will that happen to current friends? What makes a person snap and decide they no longer want to “hang”? Is it that they cannot be trusted? Did they talk shit behind your back? Did you talk shit behind their back? Who stabbed who?

I’m just sayin….. I have alot of acquaintances, how many friends do I have, and how long will I have them?

  1. I dont think friendship has a lifespan. Sometimes people grow and change and friendships fall by the wayside. Some people remain friends all their lives. It’s the luck of the draw, isn’t it?
